ACADEMICS and the ARTS - Middle School

Sixth, Seventh and Eighth

Timeless Teachings in a Changing World

When students are known, supported, and understood at a school, they feel more confident in exploring new things and taking risks. As a result, they are more likely to discover new strengths and push beyond what’s required to get a grade.

Middle School is preparation for high school and college.  When a student graduates The Learning Tree they do well in high school.  TLT middle school graduates attend competitive public, independent, and Catholic high schools throughout New York City, Westchester County and the tri-state area.  How do

we prepare our students?

Our Middle School follows and then enriches the New York State Curriculum.

We offer accelerated math classes and students often leave eighth grade ready for 10th-grade math.

An extended school day (8am - 3:45pm) allows us to enrich our curriculum in many ways.  While many schools have cut back on the arts, we provide students with several hours per week of arts including our well-developed dance, drumming, visual arts, drama, and sewing programs.

A black studies course enriches the TLT social studies curriculum. Our Rites of Passage program complements the state Health curriculum to include character development and leadership skills.

We believe exposure is important to a student's intellectual and social development. For this reason, our curriculum includes global and regional field trips.  Eighth graders travel abroad as a class during spring break, as part of our Global Exposure Program. Seventh graders have a camping excursion and sixth graders travel to the Gullah Islands in South Carolina.
